Protecting systematically selected areas of land is a major step towards biodiversity conservation worldwide. Indeed, the identification and designation of protected areas more often than not forms a core component of both national and international conservation policies. In this paper we provide an overview of those Special Protection Areas and Ramsar Sites that have been classified in Great B...

Wintering Distribution Changes in Mallards and Black Ducks

Through the use of data compiled by the Audubon Society's annual Christmas Counts, an attempt has been made to trace the distributional changes of wintering Mallards and Black Ducks in the eastern states from 1900 to the present. During this period the Black Duck has increased relative to the Mallard in few if any states (the Great Lakes region), whereas the Mallard has increased nearly everywh...

Long-term Trends and Changes in Numbers and Distribution of Some Wintering Waterfowl Species along the Swedish Baltic Coast

Regular counts of wintering waterfowl have been undertaken as a part of the International Waterfowl Census (IWC) and the National Swedish Environmental Monitoring Program since 1964. After the first years, a network of annually surveyed sites was established for the calculation of annual indices. Country-wide surveys (also including aerial counts) were undertaken 1971–1974, 1987–1989, 1992–1993...

Changes in distribution of waterbirds following prolonged drought reflect habitat availability in coastal and inland regions

Provision of suitable habitat for waterbirds is a major challenge for environmental managers in arid and semiarid regions with high spatial and temporal variability in rainfall. It is understood in broad terms that to survive waterbirds must move according to phases of wet-dry cycles, with coastal habitats providing drought refugia and inland wetlands used during the wet phase. However, both in...
